See. Be Seen.

F18 Shock Cone – Amazing Photo Sequence

On Sunday, I took my son to the Air Show at Alliance Field in Ft Worth. We watched a bunch of cool stuff, but the highlight of our day was the FA/18 Hornet. We didn’t stay long enough to see the Blue Angels, but we were in the right place, at the right time to catch a VERY cool phenomenon known as a “Shock Cone”. At near supersonic speeds, a vapor cone builds around the tail section of the F18 for a brief moment. This sequence of photos is a result of a Fighter Jet going past us at just about 700 MPH. Yes, SEVEN HUNDRED! Its days like this when 8 frames per second really does mean something. Without the speed of my camera, I would have missed this.
